Aaron Swartz‘ Google Weblog points at Bradford Delong‘s coverage of a talk that Larry Page, one of the founders of Google, gave recently.

Whew. Never typed so many URLs in a single sentence . Anyway, here’s the important part:

It wasn’t that we intended to build a search engine. We built a ranking system to deal with annotations. We wanted to annotate the web – build a system so that after you’d viewed a page you could click and see what smart comments other people had about it. But how do you decide who gets to annotate Yahoo? We needed to figure out how to choose which annotations people should look at, which meant that we needed to figure out which other sites contained comments we should classify as authoritative.

Well, buying Blogger – and accepting update pings from other weblogging software – means they’ll now have a ready-made annotation system, with millions of people ready (and some even paying) to annotate the web for them. So that’s what they had in mind all along…

Here are details on some more changes to the phpBB code.

You’ll notice page generation timing info at the bottom of forum pages and pre-sized inline images, both in browsers and RSS aggregators. For instance, my logo here:

should already come with the correct height and width values during page loading.

Next should come blogrolling, post threading and some more utility functions to help me do trackback pings to other weblogs…

I think I’m getting up to a little speed with PHP and the phpBB source.

As I’ve said elsewhere, I can now receive trackback pings and they’re automatically incorporated as preformatted posts. Also, I’m including RDF comments which allow Movable Type-compatible weblogs to autodiscover the correct URL to ping.

Today I included an option to type all phpBB pages; you’ll see a line like “Page generated in 1.561 seconds, 12 queries executed” at the bottom of every page. This will help me get a measure of the load on the server.

Also, to help browsers and RSS aggregators preformat a page, images generated by [img] tags will now include the proper height and width values at a cost of a slight slowdown. As a side effect, non-existent images will spill several error messages over the page’s header… I’m still working on failing more gracefully in this case without slowing things further. Anyway, missing images should definitely not happen a lot.

Bom, a situação do projeto da Unitron estava ficando crítica. A pressão americana estava começando e parece que havia até receio de mencionar o nome do projeto na imprensa.

Alguém pode confirmar isso? Parece que o Mac Unitron foi exibido na Feira Nacional de Informática sem sua caixa característica, super-parecida com o Mac Plus, para não parecer tão “parecido”. Tem parecência demais nesta sentença… mas qualquer parecência era mera semelhança…

Na verdade, o episódio inicial teve que ser dividido em dois, e esta é a segunda parte. Por algum motivo estranho, o jornal não quis me ceder uma página inteira…

As implicações filosóficas aqui são interessantes. Piratear um software de inteligência artificial é equivalente à clonagem? A segunda cópia tem os mesmos direitos que o original? Isso inclui direitos trabalhistas? E se houver um pique de luz…?
