(Warnings: <a href=\"http:\/\/carnaval.terra.com.br\/galerias\/0,6884,OI2313-EI1159,00.html\">some<\/a> links may not be work-safe, whatever that means, in fundamentalist countries. Also, <a href=\"htt:\/\/www.apple.com\/safari\/\">Safari<\/a> seems to choke on the JavaScript pop-ups.) Although only Tuesday and Wednesday morning are official holidays, many people take the whole week off&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Hairy Eyeball has photos and comments; so does <a href=\"http:\/\/pombostrans.blogspot.com\/\">The Enigmatic Mermaid<\/a>. Linguistic note: I&#8217;d translate &#8220;Escola de Samba&#8221; literally as &#8220;Samba School&#8221;, since &#8220;school&#8221; is used here in the sense of &#8220;school of fish&#8221;. I seem to remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardfeynman.com\/\">Richard Feynman<\/a> commenting on this, but was unable to find a reference.<\/p>\n<p>Although I&#8217;m steadfastly refusing to turn the TV on, the heat makes working at home less attractive, and production has been very low&#8230; I&#8217;ll try to work some more at internal weblogging stuff, like referrer logs and automating trackback pings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duesseldorf.de\/\">D\u00fcsseldorf<\/a>, where I was born, also has a very traditional <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duesseldorf.de\/highlights\/karneval\/index.shtml\">Karneval<\/a> holiday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Carnaval, a major holiday hereabouts.
