Klicko

In the Classic days, if you wanted to use a window that wasn't frontmost, you could click anywhere on it to bring it to the front.Mac OS X introduced a feature called "click-through" where certain controls, like the "traffic-light" buttons in the window title, would work even for background windows. Applications can also make other controls, or even the entire window, work with click-through. To make things a little confusing, in older versions, click-through was off by default for Carbon apps, but on by default for Cocoa apps.

Some people (including myself) never got used to click-through; if you too wish to have more control over what happens when you click on a background window, Klicko may solve your problem. Klicko also has two other convenient functions: window maximizing and bringing all windows of some application to the front.

Klicko is a System Preferences panel written in Cocoa. You can download Version 1.1.1 (Size: 255105 bytes) for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and up, for both PowerPC and Intel. It's freeware.

Quay

Quay extends the Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Dock to show extended popup menus for most Dock items, including applications, stacks and URLs. Quay also allows you to make folder proxy icons with easily customized icons.

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) introduced "Stacks" in the Dock, with a unique grid display. Starting with 10.5.2, Stacks once again can show hierarchical menus for their contents.

So why should you use Quay at all? Extra information, more flexibility. For one, the Dock's popups are limited to about 500 items; Quay's limit is in the tens of thousands. You can have a Quay popup on both sides of the Dock; Apple has them only on the document side. The Dock doesn't follow aliases/symbolic links in its menus; Quay does. Quay also shows application versions and (for running applications) CPU and memory statistics. Still, if for some reason you want the Dock's normal display, just hold the Option key down before clicking.

This is shareware; the price is about €7 (about US$10 - it will oscillate somewhat with currency rates). There is no trial period, but only the first Quay item in the Dock will work until you register. You can download Version 1.1.2 (Size: 1013359 bytes) for Leopard (10.5.8 recommended) or Snow Leopard (10.6).

XRay

XRay is the most advanced "Get Info" utility on the market. It lets you edit full information about files, folders, volumes and applications, including BSD permissions, type, creator & extension information, and application binding. Note: not recommended for Leopard.

XRay has a built-in file browser, and lets you move any protected file or folder to the Trash (and empty it!). You can run it from a Finder Contextual Menu. XRay's capabilities are infinitely extendable through third-party plug-ins. You can batch change permissions, type and creator for files inside a folder.

XRay is US$10 shareware for Mac OS X 10.2 to 10.4; unfortunately, it doesn't work properly on 10.5 or 10.6, and no updates for it are expected. You can download Version 1.1 (Size: 1670267 bytes) and try it out for 15 days.

Zingg!

Zingg! is a Contextual Menu that allows you to open any file, folder or group of items with a specific application.

Beyond the basic functionality now available in Jaguar, Zingg! allows you to set "always" and "never" applications. You can, for instance, set Aladdin's DropStuff as an "always" application and compress any folder or group of files directly from the Finder!

Zingg! is freeware! You can download Version 1.4.1 (Size: 506145 bytes). This is for 10.2 to 10.5 only... Mac OS X 10.1.x users can still download version 1.1.

USInternational

This is a keyboard layout for international users who are accustomed to using Microsoft Windows with US keyboards.

It duplicates exactly the behavior of Window's "U.S. - International" keyboard layout to produce accented characters, while maintaining the Mac's option-key method wherever possible.

USInternational is freeware! You can download Version 1.2 (Size: 56396 bytes) for 10.5 (Leopard). It's already built into 10.6 (Snow Leopard)!

Fax Alert Installer

Panther introduced built-in Fax receiving, but has no mechanism for alerting the user that a Fax has arrived. Until they make one, here's an easy way of doing this by installing a folder action script.

Fax Alert Installer is freeware! You can download Version 1.0 (Size: 92441 bytes) for Panther.

Nudge

This Contextual Menu "nudges" the Finder to update the information it displays about a file or folder. Use it on any item (or groups of items) if you suspect the Finder hasn't updated its view. This should work for most attribute changes, icon changes, size changes, files that have been saved but don't appear, and so forth. It now works on both PowerPC and Intel Macs, and also updates the item's access/modification timestamps.

The Nudge Contextual Menu is freeware! You can download Version 1.1 (Size: 152476 bytes) for Tiger and up.
